Greenville falls 1-0 at Historic Riggs Field despite strong defensive showing
Clemson, SC (June 6, 2025)- In a tightly-contested rivalry matchup at Clemson’s Historic Riggs Field, the Greenville Liberty fell against Asheville City SC 1-0. Despite a valiant effort from Greenville, a late goal in the 85th minute proved the difference as the Liberty fell 1-0 on Friday night.
The first half saw back-and-forth play, with both sides battling for control but neither were able to find the back of the net. The Liberty created multiple scoring opportunities, particularly off crosses. However, Greenville lacked the offensive numbers and couldn’t capitalize. The fast-paced game paused on the midway point still deadlocked 0-0.
Momentum swung Greenville’s way in the second half with two promising attacking sequences that were called back for offsides. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Emma Kirlin made a diving save to deny Asheville a shot from inside the box and to keep the match level. But in the closing minutes, the Blues broke through. After working the ball to the end line and back across the box, an Asheville attacker volleyed in the game-winner to seal the match 1-0.
With the loss, Greenville moves to 2-3-1 on the season and now turns to focus on the second half of the season. The team travels to Tennessee SC Sunday for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
