Strong first half gives Greenville the edge, but Chattanooga rallies late in high-scoring matchup
Greenville, SC (May 20, 2024)- The Greenville Liberty faced a tough 4-3 loss Tuesday night against Chattanooga. With the result, Greenville moves to 1-2-0 on the season and currently sits fifth in the South Central Division.
The Greenville Liberty came out strong in Saturday’s contest, jumping to an early lead thanks to a well-taken goal from Alexah Fite in the 3rd minute—her first in a Liberty jersey. After a corner, Fite beat her defender and lifted a perfectly placed shot over the Chattanooga keeper and into the far post.
In the 19th minute, Greenville doubled the advantage when Cameron Woods delivered a precise free kick from midfield that deflected in for an own goal against Chattanooga. The Liberty continued creating chances but couldn’t extend the lead before halftime to end the period 2-0.
Momentum stayed with Greenville into the second half. In the 55th minute, Lela Stark added a third goal after turning her defender and finishing with confidence.
Chattanooga responded just minutes later and gradually built momentum. Two quick goals in the 73rd and 74th minute brought the match level, and the visitors completed the comeback with a go-ahead goal in the 83rd.
The Liberty depart for a two match away stint at Birmingham Legion and a rematch versus Chattanooga. Greenville will continue to its home schedule on June 6th at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, SC. Tickets are on sale now.
