Late heroics from Drayton seal 2-1 win in season opener
Greenville, SC (May 14, 2025)– The Greenville Liberty Soccer Club kicked off its fourth season under the guidance of Head Coach Julie Carlson on Wednesday night, defeating One Knoxville SC in a thrilling season opener, 2-1. The victory continued Greenville’s undefeated streak in home openers.
With a refreshed roster blending returning talent and promising newcomers, Liberty SC came out with purpose and intensity. The home side struck first in the 13th minute when Lela Stark’s driven corner kick caused chaos in the box. A mishandled effort by Knoxville’s goalkeeper resulted in an own goal, giving Greenville the early 1-0 lead. As the match settled, both teams traded momentum and tested each other’s defenses. Knoxville found an equalizer in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a temporary numerical advantage to level the score at 1-1.
Greenville responded with relentless pressure in the second half—highlighted by Martha Bishop’s powerful strike in the 53rd minute that was pushed away by a brilliant save from the Knoxville keeper. Despite several close chances, the score remained deadlocked deep into the match. With stoppage time ticking away, Greenville’s determination finally broke through. Forward, Briyah Drayton stepped up in the final moments, delivering a dramatic game-winner to secure the 2-1 victory.
