Award-winning Midfielder Braithwaite re-signs with the Liberty
Greenville, SC (January 2, 2023) – The Greenville Liberty announced the return of USL W League Young Player of the Year, Christian Brathwaite, pending league and federation approval. A member of the inaugural Liberty team, Brathwaite was named to the USL W League First-Team, was a Two-time Goal of the Week winner, May Team of the Month member and nominee for Player of the Year.
One of the most decorated members of the Liberty team, Brathwaite returns for her second season after claiming four goals and four assists in 13 matches in 2022. One of her most memorable moments came in her debut match against the NC Courage U23s, after Brathwaite sent a rocket into the upper corner minutes after stepping on the pitch. From then on, she was a key player in the midfield for Greenville, helping them to a 9-3-2 season, South Atlantic division title and semifinal playoff appearance.
“Christian is a very talented player. She has great vision and awareness that will continue to excel her playing career at both UGA and Liberty,” said Head Coach Julie Carlson. “She became very confident last summer in her ability take her game to new heights. Her ability to be dangerous in the final 1/3 against the competition we faced really took on a path of its own. I would hope one day US Soccer will take notice as she is an exceptional person and player that people will really enjoy watching.”
Brathwaite joined the Liberty after competing with Barca Academy on a 05 boys team and recently graduated from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Virtual School located in Charlotte, NC. The 17-year-old will begin her freshman season this fall at the University of Georgia after beginning early enrollment in January.
Brathwaite will join former and new teammates this summer including Carly Thatcher, Autumn Cayelli, Mia Applegate and more. The 2023 USL W League is set to kick off its’ second season this May. To purchase season tickets, click here.
