Charlotte hands Greenville fourth straight loss
Greenville, SC (June 6, 2023) – The Greenville Liberty conceded two first half goals in its third consecutive match as they fell to the Charlotte Independence 2-0 at Paladin Stadium on Tuesday. The loss, the Liberty’s fourth straight, dropped their record to 2-4-0 in the South Atlantic Division.
Slow off the kick with short turnarounds from their last matches, both Charlotte and Greenvillelacked precision and struggled with fatigue. However, Charlotte quickly took advantage, composing themselves and taking control of possession. In the 11th minute, a cross from Charlotte’s Olivia Simon was headed into the net by former Greenville player, BreckynMontieth. The sudden change of score motivated the Liberty and they pressed forward, but turnovers and a lack of chemistry stalled Greenville’s progress. Later in the half, Julie Mackinunleashed a rocket shot that hit off the crossbar and bounced back with no Liberty players to pick up the rebound. As the home side tried to build momentum, though, Charlotte tallied another header goal off a corner kick in the 27th minute.
The Liberty sent a series of substitutions during the second half, as Greenville’s Robyn Moody brought life to the midfield tried to spark the team. Moody quickly drove the ball up the pitch but was unable to connect for a goal-scoring play in the final 45 minutes as the home side looked to equalize. Unfortunately for the Liberty, they were unable to find the back of the net, conceding the 2-0 loss as the whistle blew.
