Greenville concludes inaugural regular season 8-2-2
Holly Springs, NC – The Greenville Liberty SC fell to Wake FC in its final regular season match, 2-1, before returning home to prepare for their first-round playoff match on Wednesday. Wake finished as the victors following a pair of goal in the first half.
Making their first appearance at Ting Stadium, the Greenville Liberty lined up different than previous matches after a number of players returned for college preseasons. Fresh faces mixed with some seasonal veterans donned the Liberty jersey Saturday afternoon. The match kicked off with Wake FC quickly taking possession and Greenville struggling to combine efficiently. Midway through the half, Wake took the lead, 1-0 and then quickly doubled the score ten minutes later. Despite goal-scoring opportunities from Christian Brathwaite, Julie Mackin and Maddie Turlington the Liberty fell short of the net to end the half 2-0.
Storm clouds threatened in the distance, harkening back to last weekend’s match in Charlotte cut short by weather delays. As the clouds seemed to hold, Wake also managed to cling to their first half lead. Greenville’s lone bright spot on the evening came in the 75th minute, as Julie Mackin dribbled the Wake backline to meg the keeper and break through the shutout. Greenville was unable to claim another goal, however, as the clock ticked down to end the night 2-1 in favor Wake FC.
The Greenville Liberty SC returns home this Wednesday, July 13th, at 7:00 PM in their first round playoff appearance. Tickets are on sale now.
