Bornkamp claims equalizing header in Asheville draw
The Greenville Liberty SC finished the night even with second ranked, Asheville City, in a 1-1 draw in a Memorial Day match. The Liberty remain unbeaten for their fourth consecutive match of the season.
An athletic, Asheville side were quick to start the holiday match by putting high pressure on Greenville as soon as the whistle blew. In the 12th minute, Asheville City moved ahead first after floating a shot just out of reach for Greenville goalkeeper, Katelyn Kellogg. Greenville quickly regained their footing and began to steadily challenge the Asheville City defense. Upon a Greenville free kick, Megan Bornkamp released a dangerous shot outside of the 18-yard box destined for the net that was narrowly tipped over the crossbar by Asheville’s goalie. Midway through the half, a pair of Greenville subs gave the team a spark of energy but despite adjustments, the team return to the locker-room down one at the half for the second match in a row.
Mirroring Asheville’s electric start to the first half, Greenville launched into offensive overdrive for the duration of the second half. They maintained possession in Asheville’s defensive third waiting for one of their opportunities to pay off. In the 68th minute, Sarah Jacobs found Megan Bornkamp’s head on the end of a Greenville corner to tie up the match, 1-1. The Liberty relentlessly fought forward in search for another goal but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The final minutes wound down and ending the match 1-1 for Asheville City and the Greenville Liberty.
The Greenville Liberty SC return home this Friday, June 3rd playing a rematch against Asheville City SC at 7:00 pm.
